Profile of Hazelwood

by Sid Cameron, (Data by: U.S. Census Bureau, Census 2000)

Hazelwood, Missouri is an outer ring suburb located in the North County area of St. Louis County roughly 18 miles from downtown St. Louis. Because it borders St. Louis Lambert International Airport, Hazelwood is home to many of the region's aerospace, shipping and international companies seeking to benefit from the region's Foreign Trade Zone status with the US Dept of Commerce as well as quick access to the airport. Here you'll find a variety of large regional employers such as Boeing, GKN Aerospace, Covidien, and IBM.

Along with proximity to the airport, Hazelwood has excellent highway access as well. The outer belt Interstate 270 runs through the heart of the town giving the city easy access to the east/west I-70 and the inner belt I-170. Other major highways in Hazelwood include US-67 (Lindbergh Blvd) and Highway 370 which crosses the Missouri River into St. Charles County.

There has been significant retail and commercial development in Hazelwood over the past 10 years. One of the region's newest shopping malls, The St. Louis Mills Outlet Center, is located here which features a wide variety of outlet stores as well as a Cabela's. Hazelwood is also in the early stages of building a new 155-acre office park called, Aviator Business Park, on the site of a former Ford Motors Assembly Plant. It is estimated that when completed over 2,500 people will work out of this office park.

Where recreation is concerned, Hazelwood also features 17 different city parks, a community center, civic center, skate/BMX park, and the White Birch Bay Aquatic Center. Because the northern area of Hazelwood lies in the Missouri River's flood plains, it is also home to the 812-acre state managed St. Stanislaus Conservation Area which features hiking trails, bird watching and fishing.

Hazelwood is serviced by the Hazelwood School District. Sanford-Brown College also has a campus in Hazelwood near Lindbergh Blvd and I-270.
