Profile of Fenton

by Sid Cameron, (Data by: U.S. Census Bureau, Census 2000)

Fenton, Missouri is an outer ring suburb located on the southern border of Saint Louis County. A census estimate in 2008 puts Fenton's population at 4,285 people.

The Meramec River, which defines much of Fenton's northern and eastern boundaries, also defines how much of Fenton's land is used as well. Known as the "City of Parks," Fenton offers over 340 acres of parkland that features a 1.4 mile pedestrian/bicycle path adjacent to the Meramec River, as well as fishing, softball and soccer fields, picnic pavilions and playgrounds.

Fenton has long been an artery for commerce. Interstate 44, which parallels the route of historic Route 66, runs through Fenton connecting the area to downtown St. Louis 18 miles to the northeast and Springfield, MO, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and beyond to the southwest. Fenton is also served by Highway 141, an outer belt highway which runs south to I-55 and north to I-64 (also known as Highway 40). By 2012, Highway 141 will be extended to the north to connect with I-70 and Highway 370. Another east/west route, Highway 30 runs through the heart of Fenton and gives it quick access to I-270.

Much of the city's land on the north side of Fenton is dedicated to industrial and commercial use. It's here you will find the word headquarters for UniGroup, owners of Mayflower and United Van lines, Wolff Shoes and Fabick, a major regional supplier of construction equipment, among other area employers. Just outside of the Fenton borders sits Maritz, a research, incentives and travel company that employees over 3,600 people. Until 2009, Fenton was home to two Chrysler assembly plants that assembled Dodge Minivans and Dodge Ram pickups. These large factories located on the north side of I-44 are probably the most recognizable landmarks in Fenton. The future us of these plants is uncertain.

Sanford-Brown College has a campus in Fenton with an estimated 300 full-time students.
