 Profile of Saint Charles
by Sid Cameron, (Data by: U.S. Census Bureau, Census 2000)

Founded in 1765, Saint Charles is the third oldest city west of the Mississippi river. In 1804, it served as the starting point for the Lewis and Clark Expedition and from 1821-26 it served as the state of Missouri's first capital.

Although today Saint Charles is an outer ring suburb with a population of over 60,000 people, it also still retains it's historic riverfront and Main Street area which attracts year round visitors to for it's shopping, dining and recreational activities. It also hosts on the nation's largest Christmas Festivals every November and December as well as a large July 4th celebration on it's riverfront.

Setting roughly 24 miles from downtown Saint Louis, Saint Charles is connected to the rest of the area by the east/west running I-70. Residents can use I-70 to connect to downtown Saint Louis as well as the North County and West County regions of St. Louis County and Lambert International Airport.

Two additional highways cross the Missouri river from Saint Charles into Saint Louis County. The northern portion of the city is served by Highway 370 that connects to I-270 in North Saint Louis County to the east and I-70 in O'Fallon to the west. On the south side of the city Highway 364, also known as the Page Ave Extension, connects to I-270 as well.

In the heart of Saint Charles sits Lindenwood University, a private four-year liberal arts institution founded in 1827 that has grown from 800 students in the late 1980's to over 14,500 students today. In 2010, Lindenwood applied for NCAA Division II sports status.

Because of it's riverfront on the Missouri River, Saint Charles features lots of park and green space for it's residents to enjoy. The Katy Trail, a 225 mile state-owned biking and walking trail that crosses the state of Missouri, begins in Saint Charles. The city also features a convention center and an 11,000 seat arena called the Family Arena which features concerts, events and at times been home to several minor league sports teams.
