New MoDot Website Details I-64/Highway 40 Changes
By: Darin "Sid" Cameron, CRS

St Louis is abuzz with last week's Missouri Department of Transportation announcement that Interstate 64 (known to most locals as Highway 40) may in fact have a 12 mile stretch through the heart of St Louis City and County closed down completely for up to three years.

As absurd as it may sound to close down a road that carries 150,000 cars a day and serves as the main artery for the Clayton and Downtown commuters, MoDOT's thought process was that they could shave an entire year off of the construction process if they didn’t have to deal with traffic while the construction was underway.

Regardless of what MoDOT ultimately decides to do, one thing is clear- the rebuilding of Highway 40 will disrupt the lives of a lot of people here in the St Louis area because of the route's dominate roll in East/West traffic. That's why MoDOT has created a website dedicated to the I-64/Highway 40 project,

This site is full of information on the problems Highway 40 faces, the highway and safety improvements that are to be made, as well as photographs and illustrations from the 1930's and 1940's when much of Highway 40 was built.  It also features several video clips discussing the project such as the video clip (left) of Linda Wilson, Public Information with MoDOT-St. Louis.

Some of the key things to know about the project include:

- The area to be rebuilt runs from Spoede Road (just east of I-270 in West County) to Kingshighway (near the Central West End) in St. Louis.

- Work could start as early as next year and run until 2010 with an estimated budget of a $535 million (projected to be MoDOT’s single largest project ever).

- The project will rebuild 12 miles of highway, interchanges and bridges and add an additional lane in each direction between Spoede and I-170.

- Project is slated to include construction on I-170, Brentwood Boulevard and Eager Road (near the Galleria) to help the flow of traffic from I-64 to I-170.

- Forest Park Parkway, which parallels Highway 40 from Clayton to St Louis City but has been closed for two years because of the MetroLink subway construction, is expected to be reopened in 2006 to help with traffic.
