 Installing a Swimming Pool
By: Darin "Sid" Cameron, CRS

As we reach the dog days of summer, odds are in favor that at some point in time over the past few sweltering hot weeks you’ve thought to yourself how nice it would be to have a swimming pool.  I know I sure have…

So here’s the skinny on swimming pools.

Above-ground pools are usually made of steel panels with a vinyl bladder or vinyl liner covering. Depending on size and quality, these can range in price from under $1,000 to a few thousand dollars.  The downside to above-ground pools is that they’re usually no deeper than six feet- limiting diving and sliding- and either requiring a ladder to climb in or expensive decking to be built near or around it (which can add thousands to the cost of a “cheap” pool…)

In-ground pools are generally more expensive as they require a hole to be dug.  Higher quality pools will generally be custom built using concrete and can start around $15,000 for a modest pool.  However there are low cost solutions that utilize factory molded fiberglass or the same vinyl liners used in above ground pools.

The downside to in-ground pools (other than cost) is that construction can take half the summer (expect three to six weeks or more) and don’t expect to get bargains on construction until late in the season (say, October, November when you can’t go out and enjoy it).

But if you’re serious about building one and expect to sell your home in the next few years, what you really need to know is what I'm going to tell you tomorrow!
