Hurricane Prompts Casino to Relocate to St. Louis

The devastation of Biloxi, Mississippi by Hurricane Katrina has prompted the Isle of Capri Casinos, one of the 10-largest publicly held gaming companies in the United States, to announce they will be moving their International Corporate Headquarters, and an estimated 150 jobs, to the St. Louis area.

The Kansas City Star broke the story early this morning reporting that: "Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. will relocate to St. Louis from Hurricane Katrina-battered Biloxi, Miss.”

"'We have notified our employees that we're looking at St. Louis and have given them 60 days to let us know whether they are going with us,' Isle president Timothy M. Hinkley said Monday.

The Star went on to add: St. Louis “is a good, central location … a good fit for us in comparison to the location of our other properties.”

Many of the details of the move have yet to be announced.  The Isle is still trying to determine what area of St Louis they will relocate to, if they will rent existing office space or build a new headquarters building, and just how many existing employees will relocate.  However the announcement comes as good news to a city still reeling from the loss of May Department Store’s Corporate Headquarters after Macy’s purchased them earlier this year.

The Isle of Capri operates two casinos in the state- Kansas City and Booneville- however they have lost out on several occasions to own a license in the St. Louis area.

The Isle of Capri Casinos was founded in 1992 and has quickly grown to one of the 10 largest publicly held gaming companies in the U.S. with its common stock traded on the NASDAQ Stock Market under the symbol ISLE.
