 Have a "Brown" Christmas
By: Darin "Sid" Cameron, CRS

I've always been a big fan of Peanut's creator Charles Schulz.  1) When you're a kid, Snoopy is cool.  2) We share a birthday.

So that's why today's "Things to Do" blog isn't the typical get out of the house and go somewhere post.  Tonight it's stay at home and watch TV.

When ABC Channel 30 (KDNL-TV) airs the Emmy-winning "Charlie Brown Christmas Special" tonight at 7:00pm, the airing will mark the 40th anniversary of one of the most beloved specials in the history of television.

Ironically, the special almost never aired back in 1965 because CBS television executives hated it.  The executives thought the special would be poorly received with its slow pace, jazz music, lack of a laugh track and anti-commercialism message.  Of equal concern was the ending where a blanket-toting Linus reads a bible passage to convey the true meaning of Christmas.  However the special not only opened to a near 50% audience the night it aired back in 1965, but it’s been the very quirks the TV executives hated about the show that has continued to make it relevant, and draw strong TV ratings, nearly 40 years later.

Of course the irony doesn't stop there for a show which decried the commercialization of Christmas.  The special became the cornerstone in the Peanuts marketing empire that now generates over $1 billion a year in retail sales and product endorsements and continues to run strong even after the death of creator Charles Schulz in 2000.

One of the most memorable scenes of the special features Charlie Brown and Linus visiting a Christmas tree lot where they "ping" a modern shiny metal Christmas tree before deciding to purchase a scraggly little real tree that nobody else wants- and the other children make fun of.

Well, to commemorate the 40th showing, Urban Outfitters released a (wait for it) bendable plastic “exact replica” of the Charlie Brown tree “just in time for Christmas”.  Although the irony is strong, sales were stronger as the $24 tree is now sold out and selling on eBay for three times the original price.

However it is easy to forgive the commercialization of the TV classic that denounces commercialization.  It’s just that good.

So stay at home and watch a Charlie Brown Christmas Special which airs tonight at 7:00pm on St. Louis ABC Channel 30 (KDNL-TV).

(Editor's Note:  Yeah, it took me a year, but I now have one of these trees to add to our holiday decorations.  It's now the center piece on our dining room table.)
