Chrysler Group to Announce Major St. Louis Investment
By: Darin "Sid" Cameron, CRS

DaimlerChrysler, which operates two assembly plants in the St. Louis region, has called a media briefing for Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at their St. Louis South Assembly Plant in Fenton, MO where Frank Ewasyshyn, Executive Vice President of the Chrysler Group, will announce a "major manufacturing investment" in both the St. Louis North and St. Louis South Assembly Plants.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has reported that the investment from Chrysler may top over $1 billion and secure the future of the plant(s) from any potential of future plant closures.

The Post-Dispatch also speculated that after the investment Chrysler would shift additional production from other plants to their Fenton location.  Another rumor has Chrysler assuming the production of Volkswagen Minivans in an outsourcing agreement with competitor VW.

Although there have been no known reports (official or otherwise) as to the number of new jobs this investment will create for the St. Louis region, the news still comes as welcomed relief for the St. Louis manufacturing industry where rumors of Ford Motors potentially closing their Ford Explorer assembly plant here have made news lately.

Also expected to speak at the media briefing will be Frank Ewasyshyn, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, Simon Boag, Vice President of Assembly and Stamping Operations, Fred Goedtel, Vice President of Small/Premium/Family Vehicle Assembly Operations and James Wells, Director of UAW Region 5.

Representing St. Louis at the briefing will be St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt and Fenton Mayor Dennis Hancock.
