 Brown Recluse Spiders
By: Darin "Sid" Cameron, CRS

If you're new to Missouri, one of the things you have to watch out for is the Brown Recluse Spider.

It's a small spider, not much larger than a penny and if it bites you, you probably won't initially notice it for a few hours.  But by the end of the day the bite will be itchy and painful.  Left untreated it can cause vomiting and fever, joint and muscle pain and potentially organ damage and death (the later are usually children or adults with immune problems like the elderly).

Here's a link to show you what the bite might look like (NOTE: This image is graphic).

(Editor's Note: Link removed in 2010 because it was no longer available.)

Our house was infested with them when we bought it (mainly the garage).  It took six months of spraying to get rid of them.

As the name implies, they are reclusive and tend to nest in dark corners and don’t like to be out in the open or anywhere near activity (garages, basements, under beds, behind furniture, etc).  Human bites aren't really that common because they are so reclusive (and small), but when they do happen they're serious.

Per my pest inspector, they are also territorial and kill off all other spiders they come in contact with.  So if your home is infested with normal spiders, like mine is now, that's usually a positive sign.
